Honest comparison
Timbre vs Google Forms
Which is right for your team? Here’s the straight answer — including when Google Forms is the better choice.
Almost every small company runs its first employee survey in Google Forms, and that is a sensible place to start. It is free, everyone already has it, and for one question asked once it does the job.
What it does not do is the second survey, or the anonymity people will actually believe. A Form linked from a work account collects responses into a Sheet owned by someone in the company; whether or not it records the email address, employees assume it might, and that assumption shapes every answer you get. Then the manual work begins: chasing non-responders by hand, working out who rates whom for a 360, and rebuilding the analysis from scratch each cycle because nothing carries forward.
Where Google Forms genuinely shines
- Free, and already in every Google Workspace
- Anyone can build a form in ten minutes with no training
- Responses land in Sheets, where you can do anything you like with them
- Perfectly good for one-off, non-sensitive questionnaires

Choose Google Forms if…
- →You are asking one question, once, and nothing depends on the answers being candid
- →The budget is genuinely zero and the time cost does not matter
- →You need a general-purpose form, not an employee feedback program
Choose Timbre if…
- →You want honest answers, which means anonymity nobody has to take on trust
- →You are running this again next quarter and want the comparison done for you
- →You are doing 360s and do not want to hand-build a rater matrix in a spreadsheet
- →You want the write-up produced rather than assembled
Common questions
Google Forms is free. Why pay anything?
For a single questionnaire, do not. The cost of Forms is not the licence, it is the hours: chasing non-responders, building a rater matrix by hand for a 360, and rebuilding the analysis every cycle because nothing carries forward. If you run this twice a year and it takes a day each time, Timbre pays for itself on the second cycle — and that is before the difference in answer quality.
Can Google Forms be anonymous?
It can be configured not to collect email addresses, yes. The problem is that employees cannot verify that, and they know the form belongs to someone at their employer. Timbre sends each person a unique link, never shows a response attributed to anyone, and withholds written comments until enough people have answered that no comment can be traced back — with the thresholds published so people can check the claim rather than believe it.
Can we keep using Forms for other things?
Yes, and most companies do. Timbre deliberately does not do customer surveys, event sign-ups or general questionnaires. Forms is the right tool for those.
